A2173
Read Blakely shell, rectangle post copper sabot, wood
fuse, Confederate rifled 6 pounder or 20 pounder
The Blakely pattern is noted for the heavy cup brass sabot, secured to the shell by an internal post. The pattern saw very little use perhaps because
it used too much brass which was in short supply. Relatively tall shell, rounded nose, cast for a wood fuse, bourrelet rings. Interior is segmented in star shape to facilitate fragmentation.
Sabot is intact showing distortion, wood fuse is missing, metal is solid with moderate pitting. Star interior can be viewed through the fuse hole.
Recovered: Camden, SC
Diameter 3.62 in. length 9.25 in.
Ref: D & G pg. 103
