This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years.  This archive record is for educational purposes only.  Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.

All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.


Confederate officer, English imported buttons: 

B4708     Confederate staff officer "CSA" English imported button (26mm) 
 
Button depicts eagle surrounded by 11 stars, "CSA" in shield, large, very well made English button was intended for high officers of the Confederacy, the elegant design simply looks like a general's button.
Backmark: "S. ISAACS CAMPBELL & CO / (dot) LONDON (dot) /  ST. JAMES ST." dm, English import, probably made by Smith Kemp Wright. (Isaacs01).
Low convex two part button, well made button for general's frock coat.
Stand up shank intact, beautiful gilded nondug button.

Backmark:  "H T & B / * MANCHESTER * " dm on a very flat back, outer ring of dots.  English manufacture. (Hammond01)  
Two part convex coat button, flat English back.  
Stand up shank intact, beautiful gilded nondug button.

Two part coat button, extremely well made, motif is high relief.

Confederate officer button, eagle on pedestal stiff posture facing right, surrounded by 14 stars, number is artistic and not symbolic.
Backmark: "W. DOWLER / (dot) SUPERIOR QUALITY (dot)"  dm between rings of dots, made by English producer. (Dowler01)
Two part convex coat button, light gold wash, English manufacture.
Stand up shank intact, attractive gilded nondug button.

Two part convex coat size button, flat brass back has tendency to work loose.
Stand up shank intact, attractive nondug button, back is tight.

Two part coat button, false rim.  Note that button is believed to have been made by C Rouyer, but style of button and back is very close to a similar Wildt produced button.
Stand up shank intact, attractive gilded nondug button, with very small push which is present in most of these buttons.

Confederate wartime manufacture for officers, eagle facing left with wings in relaxed position, no stars, lined field and no border, very crude design, one of the rarest of the locals and only made in this size.
Backmark: Blank back, flat surface, raised area around the shank, crude construction, unknown "local" manufacture. (BlankLocal28)
Two part high convex medium size button, probably intended for an officer's hat, only made in this size, extremely crude Confederate "local" construction.
Shank intact, top grade gilded nondug button, small chip around the rim, loose shank, button is very poorly made and shanks are loose on most.

Shank intact, top grade gilded nondug button, extremely rare button.

B3215     Confederate army, eagle facing right, southern manufactured "local" button (21mm)

Confederate wartime manufacture, eagle facing right, similar to the Federal general service buttons, however the wings are in the relaxed or "drooped" position.  This two part button could have been intended for either officers or enlisted soldiers.
Backmark: Blank back, deep sloping channel, likely the product of C Rouyer, New Orleans. (BlankLocal18)
Two part convex coat size button, crude southern "local" manufacture, shank was lightly brazed and usually works loose.
Stand up shank loose but intact, attractive nondug button, button is rare to find in this condition.

Confederate wartime manufacture, eagle facing right, wings in relaxed position, on lined background.  Large rim gives the impression of a staff button but is two part design.  Convex back gives the impression of "puffback" design.  
Button was only made in this small size, likely intended for a hat and may have been intended for either officer or enlisted.
Backmark: Blank back, deep rounded channel, likely the product of C Rouyer, New Orleans. (BlankLocal19As)

Shank intact, unusually sharp button.

Confederate wartime manufacture, eagle facing left, wings in relaxed position, 13 stars on a lined field, button was designed to appear to be a three part staff button, but the fat rim is integral to the design.
