This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years. This archive record is for educational purposes only. Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author. None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.
All items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described. Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission. This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.
Alabama "Map on a tree" officer staff buttons, Schuyler backmarks, manufactured by Scovill ca 1860:

Alabama "Map on a tree" officer staff button (23mm)
Depicts state seal of Alabama, map on a tree, intended for officers
of Alabama militia units. Schuyler offered these buttons for sale in their
catalog.
Backmark: "SCHUYLER. H & G. / * NEW - YORK. * " dm with two
inner and one outer ring of dots, Scovill produced ca 1860. (Schuyler18)
Three part officer or "staff" coat button, manufactured by Scovill.
Stand up shank intact, top grade gilded nondug button.

Depicts state seal of Alabama, map on a tree, intended for officers

Backmark: "SCHUYLER. H. &. G / N - YORK." The "S" in Schuyler is reversed, dm
inner solid ring. Scovill produced ca 1860, for small buttons only.

Backmark: "SUPERFIN / (diamond) PARIS (diamond) " dm between rings.
This was believed to be a disguised backmark to conceal sales by
the northern manufacturers to the south during the conflict. (Superfin01)

Mobile Cadet buttons, Scovill manufactured during 1860's, dating is uncertain:

Mobile Cadet button (24mm)
Backmark: "Scovill Mf'g Co / Waterbury" dm between rings. There is
some uncertainty as to the dating of these buttons. The wide rim suggests later.
However the Scovill backmark is well known and accepted on other period buttons.
The cadets were organized in 1845, and served with distinction during the war.
The button is relatively rare, dating uncertain

Alabama Cadet Corps (ACC) buttons, it is believed this was for University of Alabama, Scovill manufactured during 1850's:

Alabama Cadet Corps "ACC" button (20.3mm)
The "ACC" motif was apparently manufactured by Scovill for more
than one unit, most backmarks are late, this rmdc backmark is found on
the University of Alabama campus, suggesting association
with the cadet corps there before the war.
Backmark: "SCOVILL MG CO / SUPERFINE" rmdc
Stand up shank intact, dug button is gilded, small crack on the back
