This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years. This archive record is for educational purposes only. Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author. None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.
All items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described. Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission. This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Carolina state seal button (21.7mm)
Button depicts the seal of South Carolina, a palmetto
tree over an oak log, symbolic of the Revolutionary
War victory at Sullivans Island.
Backmark: "YOUNG. SMITH & CO / * * * NEW. YORK * * * " dm two
inner solid rings, third inner ring is set of triangles resembling a
gear, Scovill produced ca 1830's or 1840's (Young08)
Two part convex coat button, slight convex back, well made button is silvered.
Stand up shank intact, silvered nondug button.

Depicts South Carolina state seal, the Palmetto tree. The Latin word in the
motto, "opibusque" is mispelled "opirusque", a die makers
error.
Backmark: "HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / (dot) NY (dot)" dm between two
solid rings, inner ring of rays, Steele & Johnson produced ca 1860

Citadel
Cadet, South Carolina (18mm)
Backmark: "Horstmann & Allien / NY" dm between
two rings. These buttons do show up on an identified cadet uniform on display at
the Citadel museum in Charleston, SC. Buttons are identified as SC militia by
both Albert and Tice, but this is cadet size, not militia size button and
examples have been found on the old Citadel campus downtown Charleston.
Shank intact, fully gilded nondug button.

Backmark: "VAN WART SON & CO" These buttons were made in 1864 to
run the blockade, but never made it in. It is not clear who actually made these
buttons. The English producer, Smith Kemp Wright probably made these buttons.

Carolina Palmetto guard (23.4mm)
Motif depicts the South Carolina state seal, usually a
Palmetto tree, this one modified with a snake and the usual "SC"
letters replaced with "CS" for Confederate States, a defiant wartime
button. Association with the South Carolina unit, "Palmetto Guard" is
not absolutely proven.
Backmark: " (graphic of lion head) / EXTRA GOLD (script) QUALy. (sic)
", likely Smith Kemp Wright 1862 to 1865, but not proven (ExtraG01)
Overcoat size two piece button was brought in through the blockade.

Mountain Military School button (20mm)
Kings Mountain Military was formed 1855, Yorkville SC (modern day York SC) this
two part "cadet" size button was supplied at that time.
