B4977
New
Jersey state seal staff button (22.3mm)
Depicts state seal of New Jersey, intended for officers of
New Jersey militia units.
Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G CO, / WATERBURY. " dm between two rings of
dots, ca 1860's. (ScovillM23)
Some collectors believe this button to be post war, including Tice who authored
the book. However, this backmark is commonly seen on many other buttons accepted
as period, and the rim is narrow. You make the choice, I believe this is a ca
1860 version of this button. Three part officer or "staff" coat
button.
Stand up shank intact, top grade gilded nondug button.
