This is a sampling of relics collected by Harry Ridgeway over the years.  This archive record is for educational purposes only.  Some of the relics listed may be on display at the Old Court House Civil War Museum, Winchester Virginia, some are no longer owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to the separate sales catalog for items that are currently offered.

All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.


B4517     Pennsylvania state seal staff button (23mm)
 
Backmark: "Horstmann / NY & Philada" dm between two rings
of dots. Transitional backmark dating from 1860.
Stand up shank intact, attractive nondug button.

B4756     Pennsylvania state seal, officer staff button (23mm) 
 
State seal of Pennsylvania, two horses over a coat of arms, early design with both facing right, intended for officers of Pennsylvania militia units.
Backmark:  "SUPERIOR / * QUALITY * " dm between two rings of dots, sloppy stamping, Steele & Johnson ca 1860 (Superior04)
Three part officer style button, coat size, stamping is often weak.
Stand up shank intact, gilded nondug button.

Backmark: "Horstmann's / NY & PHI" dm dots around the shank

B5287     Pennsylvania staff button (23mm)  
 
Motif depicts state seal of Pennsylvania, an eagle over ship with full sail, and shock of wheat, surrounded by two active horses, general stock pattern intended for officers of Pennsylvania militia units.  
Backmark: "W. G.  MINTZER.  / * PHILD... * "dm between two rings of dots, probably Steele & Johnson ca 1860-1865 (Mintzer03)  
Three part officer style button, coat size, button was manufactured by Steele and Johnson, for Mintzer who produced uniforms.  
Stand up shank intact, attractive gilded nondug button.

State seal of Pennsylvania, two horses over a coat of arms, early design with both facing right, intended for officers of Pennsylvania militia units.  
Backmark:  "WATERBURY BUTTON CO. / * EXTRA* " dm between two rings of dots, ca 1860's, (Waterbury17)  
Three part officer style button, coat size, stamping is often weak.

B4519     Pennsylvania National Guard "NG" (14.6mm)

G0001     Pennsylvania "State Fencibles" staff officer button (22.8mm)

The Pennsylvania State Fencibles was organized before the war and re-organized after the war. Button depicts an officer style eagle with STATE FENCIBLES" AND "1813". This button was probably produced around 1880. 
Backmark: "HORSTMANN BROS. & CO / (dot) PHIL (dot) " dm large letters with no serifs between two rings of dots, manufactured after after 1880. (HorstmannB06) 
Three part officer coat button, post war rim is wide, back is silvered. 
Shank intact, top grade gilded nondug button.
