Buttons issued by the states of the Confederacy
There were
eleven states that seceded from the Union to form the Confederacy:
Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama,
Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas
In addition, two border states, Kentucky and Maryland, did not secede, but buttons from these states are generally considered to be Confederate used because southern sympathizers from these states were more likely to continue use of their state accoutrements whereas northern sympathizers were more likely to have been issued new Federal issue equipment, and would have been less inclined to demonstrate state loyalty.
All Civil War buttons listed are absolutely guaranteed authentic to the Civil War or earlier or as otherwise described.
Dug or "battlefield" relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.
