B5592.     North Carolina button, state seal ladies Liberty and Plenty, officer staff, Extra Quality dm between rings, by Scovill, variant with shank well, (22.5mm)
Button depicts state seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, manufactured before the war for officers of  North Carolina units.  Backmark: "EXTRA / (star) QUALITY (star)" dm small letters between two rings of dots, a faint inner ring sometimes appears which may have been formed when the shank was installed producing a slight depression around the shank, Scovill produced ca 1860, (ExtraQ01).  This button is well made suggesting it was made in a different time frame from the more common variety noted for sloppy assembly.  Three part officer staff button, coat size.  Nondug button, gilded, stand up shank intact.

Button depicts the seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, intended for troops of North Carolina, southern wartime manufacture.  Backmark:  blank depressed narrow channel well formed, with star, wide flat area around shank with some variance of dimension, copper or brass wire shank, likely made by Wildt, (BlankSouthern370).   Two part convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local", copper wire shank spot brazed.

Button depicts the seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, intended for troops of North Carolina, southern wartime manufacture.  Backmark: "S. A. MYERS / RICHMOND VA." rmdc, wartime manufacture attributed to S. A Myers, Richmond, Virginia, (Myers01).  Two part convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local", copper wire shank.  Nondug button is gilded, nicely toned, stand up shank.

Button depicts the state seal of Georgia, a dome bearing "Constitution" supported by three pillars, "Wisdom", "Justice", and "Moderation", intended for Georgia units.  Backmark: "HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / (dot) NY (dot)" dm between two solid rings, inner ring of rays, Steele & Johnson produced ca 1860, (HorstmannA10)Two part convex button, coat size.  Nondug button, gilded stand up shank.

B6152.     Confederate officer button, eagle facing right with 11 stars on a lined field with border, English import, Extra Rich Treble Gilt, (24mm)
Button depicts eagle on pedestal facing right surrounded by 11 stars, intended for Confederate officers.  Pattern was made late in the war, most did not make it through the blockade in time, and were unissued.  Backmark: "EXTRA RICH / (dot) TREBLE GILT (dot)" dm outer ring of dots, inner solid ring, English manufacture unknown, (ExtraR01). Two part coat button, extremely well made, motif is high relief.  Nondug button, gilded, stand up shank intact.

Button depicts Arkansas state seal, goddess of Liberty over a shield surrounded by an eagle, manufactured before the war for officers of Arkansas units.  Backmark: "HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / N.Y.", dm no rings, probably Steele & Johnson ca 1860, (HorstmannA12).  Three part officer staff button, coat size.  Nondug button, gilded, un-cleaned with minor green spots, back rotates but is not pushed.

Button depicts Arkansas state seal, goddess of Liberty over a shield surrounded by an eagle, manufactured before the war for officers of Arkansas units.  Backmark: "HORSTMANN / (dot) NEW YORK (dot)" dm, probably Steele & Johnson manufactured ca 1860, (HorstmannWH33small).  Three part officer staff button, hat or sleeve size.  Nondug button, gilded, minor green spots, back rotates but is not pushed.

Button depicts state seal of Kentucky, two figures shaking hands, "United we stand, divided we fall", intended for officers of Kentucky militia units, which were few in number but generally sympathetic to the southern cause.  Backmark:  "SCOVILL MF'G CO, / WATERBURY.  dm between one outer ring and two inner rings of dots, ca 1860, (ScovillM300).  Three part officer staff button, coat size.  Nondug button.

B6460.     Missouri button, state seal bears around a shield, officer staff, pattern with stars above the eagle, Scovill Mfg. Co., dm between two rings, (22.3mm)
Button depicts the state seal of Missouri, an eagle with two bears around a shield with motto, "UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL", intended for officers of Missouri militia units, who generally sided with the North but served both sides.  This Scovill die variant has no stars above the eagle, and the divider on the left side under the crescent is an arc.  This Scovill die variant has stars above the eagle, and the divider on the left side under the crescent is wavy.  Backmark:  "SCOVILL MF'G CO, / WATERBURY." dm between two rings of dots, ca 1860's, (ScovillM310).  Three part officer staff button, coat size.  Nondug button.

Button depicts the state seal of Alabama, a map on a tree, intended for officers of Alabama militia units.  Backmark: "SCHUYLER. H. &. G / N - YORK." , the "S" in Schuyler is  reversed, dm inner solid ring, Scovill produced ca 1860, for small buttons only, (Schuyler20small). Three part officer staff button, hat or sleeve size.

Button depicts the state seal of Texas, the lone star intended for Texas troops.  This pattern features flat star surrounded by "TEXAS" on lined field.  Backmark:  "EXTRA / (star) (star) (star)  RICH (star) (star) (star)" dm between two rings of dots, Scovill manufactured ca 1860, (ExtraR02).  Two part convex button, coat size.

Button was intended for officers, depicting patriotic symbolism of eagle grasping arrows for war and olive branch for peace.  This die pattern features eagle facing right surrounded by 23 stars, stripes only in shield with concave top, bulged side, and rounded bottom with a point, four arrows in right talon.  Backmark:  "EXTRA. / (star) QUALITY. (star)" dm between rings of dots, likely manufactured by Steele & Johnson, ca 1860, (ExtraQ07).  Three part officer button, coat size.  Nondug button

B6715.     Federal Navy button, eagle over horizontal anchor, fluke is behind the wing, E.L.E. Co London, dm on ribbon, (22.2mm).

Button depicts eagle over horizontal anchor surrounded by 13 stars, pattern prevalent from the 1850's onward, generally intended for Federal Navy officers.  This die variant features fluke behind the wing.  Backmark:  ""E. L. E. & Co London" dm ribbon with a crown, ELE was likely an English supplier, button made by D Evans ca 1860's, (ELE01).  Two part convex button, large coat size.  Nondug button.

B6845.     Confederate infantry button, block "I" on plain background with border, Confederate wartime manufacture, iron back with ring of dots, and copper shank, (22.5mm).
Button depicts simple block "I" on plain field with border, intended for Confederate infantry troops, southern wartime manufacture, a "local".  The size and dimensions of the "I" can vary considerably suggesting that multiple manufacturers may have been employed.  Backmark: blank iron back, ring of dots loosely spaced, two inner solid rings, no marks, back is crudely crimped, (BlankSouthern510).  Two part convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local", brass face with iron back, copper wire shank. Nondug button.

B6851.     Ball or bullet buttons, Scovill MFG Co.
Manufactured 1840's or 1850's, intended for cadets, Zouaves or militia.  The "ball" or "bullet"  button was meant to look round from the front, the back is flat but because of the round shape of the button, the back is much smaller than the rest of the button.  The backmark on all ball buttons is sloppy, suggesting that this highly convex button was difficult to manufacture and assemble.  This lot of 36 buttons, all alike, apparently came off of the same jacket, probably three rows of buttons plus buttons on the collar sleeve or tail.
