Ball or bullet buttons, Scovill MFG Co.
Manufactured 1840's or 1850's, intended for cadets, Zouaves or
militia. The "ball" or "bullet" button was meant to look round from
the front, the back is flat but because of the round shape of the
button, the back is much smaller than the rest of the button. The
backmark on all ball buttons is sloppy, suggesting that this highly
convex button was difficult to manufacture and assemble. This lot of 36
buttons, all alike, apparently came off of the same jacket, probably
three rows of buttons plus buttons on the collar sleeve or tail.
Each button individually. $15.
Available as a group, 30 buttons, all from the same jacket. $300. |
