Blank.100, (20mm).
Backmark: blank back, one part flat button manufactured before 1820, (Blank.100).
Many variations of the true "blank back". Most buttons of the pre 1820 period were flat and blank. Some have "alpha" shanks which were wire shanks with weak brazing, others have "omega" shanks, which were footed and brazed. Some buttons were cast and milled, some were stamped, and others were first cast, then stamped, these will often show a seam parallel with the shank, which means the button was stamped to sharpen after the shank was installed. These techniques were used by many different manufacturers and there will be numerous minute variations, too minute to keep up with, so this general category is used to catalog buttons manufactured before 1820, with plain flat backs.

Blank.101, (21mm).
Backmark: blank back, one part flat button manufactured before 1830's or 1840's, (Blank.101).
There are many variations of the true "blank back". Most buttons of the pre 1820 period were flat and blank and some flat buttons of the 1830's were also plain. The buttons of the 1830's were generally more thick and slightly larger than the 1820's, but otherwise a plain flat back with no markings is indistinguishable, one maker to the next.
