This is the "Ridgeway Civil War Library", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader. Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author. This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items. I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described. Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission. This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Most information on this page is from Tice or Albert books, the pictures are generally from buttons analyzed by the author.

"Extra Quality" "Extra Fine, Extra Gilt, Extra Plate, etc backmarks were generic stock backmarks or tradename backmarks denoting quality. There are many variations of this backmark, uncertainty as to who the actual producers were of some of them, so all are listed here as I find them..

Backmark: "EXTRA / QUALITY" dm between two rings of elongated dots, Steele & Johnson manufacture, ca1850s, or 1860's, (Extra Quality by Steele Johnson.200). Reference: Tice, Dating Buttons.
B4509...Federal officer staff button, eagle with shield, three part officer coat, "EXTRA / QUALITY" dm, Steele & Johnson manufacture, (23mm). Button was intended for officers, depicting patriotic symbolism of eagle grasping arrows for war and olive branch for peace. This die pattern features eagle facing right surrounded by 23 stars, stripes only in shield with concave top, bulged side, and rounded bottom with a point, four arrows in right talon. Backmark: "EXTRA / QUALITY" dm between two rings of elongated dots, Steele & Johnson manufacture, ca1850s, or 1860's, (Extra Quality by Steele Johnson.200). Three part officer button, coat size.

Die pattern, eagle faces right surrounded by 24 stars, eagle neck is short and feathery, shield with stars and stripes, concave top, blunt ears, bulged sides, and rounded bottom with a point, eagle wings are stylized rounded and symmetrical, four arrows in right talon unequal in length, seven tail feathers are feathery and spread like a fan. This version of Extra Quality with small letters and elongated dots is likely manufactured by Steele & Johnson.

This pattern is attributed to Steele & Johnson, horse on the right facing over its shoulder is relatively horizontal, and tail of "Q" is seperated from the ring of dots.
