Ethelbert Halfmann was a clothier operating from Montgomery Alabama before the war. Buttons sold during this period were manfactured by Scovill. During the war the partnership of Halfmann & Taylor was formed, buttons were produced in England and smuggled through the blockade.

B7204...Alabama regiment button, Alabama Volunteer Corps, "AVC", "E. HALFMANN / (dot) MONTGOMERY ALA (dot) " rmdc, (20.6mm).
Button depicts eagle with wings in relaxed position, "AVC" above, manufactured before the war, intended for troops from Alabama Volunteer Corps. Backmark: "E. HALFMANN / (dot) MONTGOMERY ALA (dot) " rmdc on stippled field, Scovill produced ca 1860, (Halfmann110). Two part convex button, coat size. Dug button with gilding, small push, shank missing. Recovered not known. Reference: Albert AB3, Tice AB214A2.

B5822...Alabama regiment button, Alabama Volunteer Corps, "AVC", "E. HALFMANN / (dot) MONTGOMERY AL (dot) ", dm, (15.5mm).
Button depicts eagle with wings in relaxed position, "AVC" above, manufactured before the war, intended for troops from Alabama Volunteer Corps. Backmark: "E. HALFMANN / (dot) MONTGOMERY AL (dot) ", dm two inner solid rings, Scovill produced ca 1860, only for small size buttons, (Halfmann120). Two part convex button, hat or sleeve size. Dug button. Recovered: not known. Reference: Albert AB3, Tice AB214As2.


Halfmann.200 (26mm).
Backmark: "HALFMANN & TAYLOR / (dot) MONTGOMERY (dot)" dm outer ring of dots, inner solid ring crowds the shank, English import, probably Smith Kemp Wright, (Halfmann.200). Reference: Tice, Dating Buttons, page 191.
