Young, Smith & Company operated in New York from approximately 1830 to around 1858. Backmarks from the partnership generally bear both names but in either order. W H Smith also sold buttons bearing his name solely.

Button depicts Virginia state seal, Virtus slaying the tyrant, intended for Virginia troops. This design of the state seal with the sword and spear both pointed upward was prevalent in designs before the war. This die variant features a small ball on the spear, no dots in the legend, and backmark with stars dividing. Backmark: "YOUNG. SMITH & CO / (star) New (dot) York (star)" rm, between two rings of dots, 1830s one piece flat button, (Young.110). One part low convex button, coat size. Nondug button.
