This is the "Ridgeway Civil War Research Center", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader. I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described. Washington Inaugural Button Eagle with Glory ( 32mm).
Button depicts eagle with 13 stars and cloud of glory. These "Washington Inaugural" buttons were political button made to commemorate the inauguration of America's first President. The first inauguration captured the hearts and minds of the public and a number of different patterns of buttons were produced to commemorate the event. In those days political buttons really were buttons.

Button depicts the log cabin, symbolism for the 1840 presidential campaign. This campaign was the most productive use of campaign buttons, the buttons actually were buttons and not pins or stickers. Backmark: "BENEDICT & BURNHAM " dm on a ribbon with an eagle, ca 1830's or 1840's, (BenedictB01). Two part convex button, coat size.

Backmark: "SCOVILLS & CO / WATERBURY" Two piece buttons were well developed by this point. Political buttons up to this point really were buttons, not the pins of today. This campaign was the most prolific. Later political pins were made as pins, generally. These buttons are frequently found on Civil War sites. So why are they found on Civil War battlefields? Button bears patriotic symbolism, eagle with shield and banner bearing "Sovereignty, National, Union". Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G Co. (o is underlined) / (star) WATERBURY (star)" dm large letters inner ring of dots, manufactured after the Civil War, (ScovillM501). This appears to be a patriotic button produced in the period following the Civil War by Scovill. This mark is commonly found on buttons of the 1870's and 1880's. Three part staff style button. Manufactured after the Civil War.

Button bears patriotic symbolism, eagle with shield and banner bearing "Sovereignty, National, Union". Backmark: "SCOVILL MF'G Co. (o is underlined) / (star) WATERBURY (star)" dm large letters inner ring of dots, manufactured after the Civil War, (ScovillM501). This appears to be a patriotic button produced in the period following the Civil War by Scovill. This mark is commonly found on buttons of the 1870's and 1880's. Three part staff style button. Manufactured after the Civil War.

B1237...Liberty & Union patriotic button , (15mm).

B1953...Hard rubber Civil War era button.
Backmark: "N R Co / Goodyear's P=T 1851" Head of a woman, this is civilian button of the Civil War period Brass shank intact, nondug button.
