This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

  Courtney & Tennent was a Confederate outfitter and importer.  Backmark: "COURTNEY & TENNENT / (dot) S. C (dot) /  CHARLESTON. " dm, flat back, Firmin made the button, (Courtney01).  Two part very high convex button with strong features, large coat size.

  This pattern button was originally purchased by Captain Sinclair, to outfit the CSS Texas.  However as the southern cause waned, British authorities seized the ship under construction and diverted it to other use.  Backmark:  "COURTNEY & / TENNENT" dm inner ring of dots outer edge is beveled, made by Firmin, (Courtney02Vest).  Two part very high convex button with strong features, small hat or sleeve size.

Button depicts fluted anchor, high quality English manufacture, intended for Confederate officers.  This die pattern features anchor with two bands on a lined field over "CSN" with a rope border with a right handed twist (almost all other English made Navy buttons have a left handed twist).
  Button is an unusual design, and was probably not made by Firmin, maker may be Smith Kemp Wright but is not confirmed, this is a rare pattern.  Backmark: " TREBLE STANDd / (dot) EXTRA RICH (dot) " dm between outer ring of dots, inner solid ring, maker could be Smith Kemp Wright but is not confirmed, (Treble03)Two part coat size button, unusual high convex button with strong features and a raised rim giving the impression of a very fat button.

Backmark:  blank with no contours, blank possibly to disguise the agent of origin, this is English manufacture likely Smith Kemp Wright, (BlankEng03). Two part high convex button, vest or hat size.

Backmark: blank copper back, with channel, crude manufacture by unknown southern maker, (BlankSouthern470).  Two part convex coat size button, crude Confederate manufacture.

Confederate Navy, "CN", hard rubber button for CSS Texas, anchor with crossed cannons, Courtney & Tennent, (33mm)  
Button depicts fluted anchor with cannons over "CN", large hard rubber button intended for Confederate enlisted navy.  Captain Terry Sinclair obtained these buttons from the English manufacturer for the Confederate warship, CSS Texas.  The ship was being constructed at Thomson shipyard in England and was to be more powerful than the famed CSS Alabama.  As the war dragged on and the English lost faith in the Confederate cause,  the ship was seized and sold to another foreign power and Sinclair was captain without a ship.  These buttons were never used and all were recovered from his estate.   Backmark: "COURTNEY & TENNENT / (dot) CHARLESTON. S .C (dot) / MANTON'S PATENT" dm. Courtney 04.  Concave button made of plastic like material designed to be sewed.

Confederate Navy "restrike" button, "CSN" anchor with two bands on lined background with rope border, English souvenir manufacture, Firmin LD, (25mm)
Button is a restrike of CS51 and was made by Firmin, probably for the reunions late 19th or early 20th century or perhaps to sell to the battlefield souvenir market.  The face was apparently struck from the original dies, an updated backmark dating to after 1875 was used, otherwise the button is very close to the original.  Backmark:  "FIRMIN & SONS LD / + LONDON + " dm between two rings of dots, made by Firmin, the use of "LD" designation dates manufacture to after 1875, (Firmin99)Two part large size button, high convex, English manufacture after the War.
