This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Button depicts the
state seal of Alabama, a map on a tree, intended for officers of Alabama militia units.  Backmark: "SCHUYLER. H & G. / * NEW - YORK. * " dm with two inner and one outer ring of dots, Scovill produced ca 1860, (Schuyler18).  Three part officer or "staff" coat size button, gilded.

Button depicts the
state seal of Alabama, a map on a tree, intended for officers of Alabama militia units.  Backmark: "SCHUYLER. H. &. G / N - YORK." , the "S" in Schuyler is  reversed, dm inner solid ring, Scovill produced ca 1860, for small buttons only, (Schuyler20As). Three part officer or "staff" button, hat or sleeve size, gilded.

Button depicts the
state seal of Alabama, a map on a tree, intended for officers of Alabama militia units.  Backmark:  "SUPERFIN / (diamond) PARIS (diamond) " dm between rings, this may have been a disguised backmark to conceal sales by the northern manufacturers to the south during the conflict, (Superfin01).   Three part officer or "staff" button, coat size, gilded.

eagle with wings in relaxed position, "AVC" above, manufactured before the war, intended for troops from Alabama.  This die variant is only made in overcoat size.  Backmark:  "SCOVILL MF'G CO. / WATERBURY CT.. "rmdc, ca 1850's, (ScovillM230).  Two part button, large coat size

Button depicts eagle with wings in relaxed position, "AVC" above, manufactured before the war, intended for troops from Alabama.  Backmark: "W. G. MINTZER / (dot) PHILD.. * " rmdc in stippled field, back is silvered, probably Steele & Johnson ca 1860-1865, (Mintzer04).   Two part convex button, coat size, gilded.

Alabama button, Mobile Volunteer Corps "MVC", Scovill Mfg, rmdc, (20.6mm)
Button depicts eagle with wings in relaxed position, "MVC" above, manufactured before the war.  Very similar to the "AVC", it has been thought that this was intended for troops from Mobile Volunteer Corp, Alabama, although the existence of a unit by this name has not been definitely established.  Backmark:  "SCOVILL MFG CO / (dot) WATERBURY (dot)" rmdc, ca 1850's, (ScovillM240).   Two part convex button, coat size.

Alabama button, state seal, "Map of Alabama", "Mobile Cadet", officer staff, Scovill Mfg. dm between rings, (24mm)
Button depicts the
state seal of Alabama, a map on a tree, "Mobil Cadets".  There is some uncertainty as to the dating of these buttons. The wide rim suggests later. However the Scovill backmark is well known and accepted on other period buttons. The cadets were organized in 1845, and served with distinction during the war.  Backmark:  "SCOVILL MF'G CO, / WATERBURY. " dm between two rings of dots, ca 1860's, (ScovillM311).  Three part officer staff button, large coat size.

Alabama cadet button, Alabama Cadet Corps button, "ACC", likely University of Alabama, Scovill MG., rmdc, (20.3mm)
Button depicts "ACC" in a wreath, believed to have been intended for University of Alabama Cadet Corps.  This pattern may have been produced by Scovill for more than one purpose, most backmarks associated with this face are late, this one is 1850's. 
Backmark:  "SCOVILL. MG. CO. / SUPERFINE." rmdc., ca 1850's, (ScovillM140).  Two part convex button, coat size.

B4637     Alabama cadet button, Alabama Cadet Corps button, "ACC", likely University of Alabama, Scovill MG., rmdc, (20.3mm)
 
Button depicts "ACC" in a wreath, believed to have been intended for University of Alabama Cadet Corps.  This pattern may have been produced by Scovill for more than one purpose, most backmarks associated with this face are late, this one is 1850's. 
Backmark:  "SCOVILL. MG. CO. / SUPERFINE." rmdc., ca 1850's, (ScovillM140).  Two part convex button, coat size.  Dug button, with gilding, stand up shank, small crack on the back.  Recovered: University of Alabama campus, not confirmed.
