This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Button depicts a pelican feeding her young on a lined field with a rope border, intended for Louisiana militia units.  Backmark:  "EXTRA / (star) (star) (star)  RICH (star) (star) (star)" dm between two rings of dots, Scovill manufactured ca 1860, (ExtraR02).  Two part convex button, coat size.

Button depicts a pelican facing left on a lined field with a plain border, intended for Louisiana militia units.  This die was produced by Steele & Johnson before the war, subcontract for Horstmann.  Backmark:  "HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / (dot) NY (dot)" dm between two solid rings, inner ring of rays, rays are longer, Steele & Johnson produced ca 1860, (HorstmannA10).  Two part convex button, coat size.

Button depicts a pelican facing left on a lined field with a plain border, intended for Louisiana militia units.  This die was probably produced by Steele & Johnson before the war, subcontract for Horstmann.  Backmark:  "HORSTMANN'S  / NY. & PHI. " dm between two rings of dots, ca 1860, (HorstmannWH27).  Two part convex button, coat size.

Button depicts a pelican feeding her young on a lined field with a plain border, intended for Louisiana militia units.  This die variant, (Albert LA3), produced by Scovill before the war, features a smooth border, and a pelican with slightly thicker wings and a larger nest.  Backmark:  "HYDE & GOODRICH / (dot) NEW ORLEANS (dot) " dm, inner ring of dots, Scovill produced ca 1860, (Hyde04).  Two part convex button, coat size.

Button depicts a pelican feeding her young on a lined field with a rope border, intended for Louisiana militia units.  This die variant, (Albert LA2), produced by Scovill before the war, features rope like border, and a pelican with slightly thinner wings and a smaller nest.  Backmark:  "SCOVILL. MF'G. CO. / (star) WATERBURY. (star) " dm between rings of dots, ca 1860's, (ScovillM340).  Two part convex button, coat size.

Button depicts the state seal of Louisiana, a pelican feeding her young, intended for troops from Louisiana units.  Backmark:  "SCOVILL. / MFG. CO." dm no rings, used in small size only, ca 1860, (ScovillM420Small).  Two part convex button, hat or sleeve size.

Button depicts a pelican feeding her young on a plain field without a border, intended for Louisiana militia units.    Backmark: blank back, ring of dots, dm, maker not identified, (BlankNorth11As).  Two part convex button, hat or sleeve size, gilded.

Louisiana button, state seal pelican with head to the right on a lined field, southern wartime manufacture, C. Bellenot, (21.7mm)
Button depicts a pelican feeding her young, intended for troops of Louisiana, southern wartime manufacture.  This design was copied from a similar pre-war version.  Backmark: "C. BELLENOT. / * N. O. * ", rm letters do not bear serifs, southern wartime manufacture by C. Bellenot, New Orleans, (Bellenot01).   Two part convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local", backmark stamping is usually very weak.

Button depicts a pelican feeding her young, intended for troops of Louisiana, southern wartime manufacture.  Backmark:  blank depressed rounded channel, narrow area around shank with some variance of dimension, depressed well usually around the shank, copper or wire wire shank was fitted only and not brazed and is usually loose, likely the product of C Rouyer, New Orleans, (BlankSouthern340).  Two part convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local".

Button depicts a pelican feeding her young, intended for troops of Louisiana, southern wartime manufacture.  This pattern features pelican with side view, on plain field with pronounced border, button back is convex, or "puffback".  Backmark:  blank back, back is convex, "puffback", weak outer channel gives impression of rings, likely the product of one of the New Orleans producers, (BlankSouthern301).   Two part convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local".
