This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Button depicts state seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, manufactured before the war for North Carolina  troops.  Kent Paine & Co., Richmond, Virginia, supplied uniforms, the buttons were made by Scovill.  Backmark: "KENT. PAINE & CO. / RICHMOND." dm inner ring of dots, Scovill manufacture 1860, (Kent02).  Two part convex button, hat or sleeve size.

North Carolina button, state seal ladies Liberty and Plenty, officer staff, Extra Quality dm between rings, by Scovill, variant with shank well, (22.5mm)
Button depicts state seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, manufactured before the war for officers of  North Carolina units.  Backmark: "EXTRA / (star) QUALITY (star)" dm small letters between two rings of dots, a faint inner ring sometimes appears which may have been formed when the shank was installed producing a slight depression around the shank, Scovill produced ca 1860, (ExtraQ01).  This button is well made suggesting it was made in a different time frame from the more common variety noted for sloppy assembly.  Three part officer staff button, coat size.

CO. / WATERBURY." dm inner ring of dots, inner solid ring is often obscured, small letters, made in small size only, this is abbreviated version of Scovill series of dm early 1860's buttons, (Scovill460Small).  Three part officer staff button, hat or sleeve size.

Button is sometimes referred to as the "standing shepherd" button, however it is actually ladies "Liberty" sitting with "Plenty" standing.   Backmark:  blank depressed rounded channel, narrow area around shank with some variance of dimension, depressed well usually around the shank, copper or wire wire shank was fitted only and not brazed and is usually loose, likely the product of C Rouyer, New Orleans, (BlankSouthern341).  Two part convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local".

Button depicts the seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, intended for troops of North Carolina, southern wartime manufacture.  Backmark:  blank depressed wide channel imperfectly formed,  narrow area around shank with variance of dimension, star in the channel is often weak and may be obscured by corrosion, a worn die or debris during stamping, shank is drilled from sheet copper, likely made by Wildt,  (BlankSouthern390).   Two part convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local", button was made from poor quality sheet metal, which will often show crimping or lamination, the shank was made from scraps of the sheet metal drilled, a substitution for wire earlier used.

Button depicts the seal of North Carolina, ladies Liberty and Plenty, intended for troops of North Carolina, southern wartime manufacture.  This variant is slightly smaller in diameter and more convex than other similar examples noted, this may be a variation of assembly and not design.  Iron wire shank may be factory installation and infrequently seen.  Backmark:  blank depressed narrow channel imperfectly formed, wide flat area around shank with some variance of dimension, iron shank, likely the product of either Wildt or Rouyer, (BlankSouthern440).  Two part high convex button, coat size, crudely stamped and assembled southern "local", iron wire shank spot brazed.
