This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Button depicts South Carolina state seal, palmetto tree, intended for South Carolina troops.  Backmark: "CANFIELD BRO & CO. / (dot) BALTIMOR (sic) (dot)" dm between outer solid ring, inner ring of large dots, letters are not well formed, likely Steele & Johnson manufacture ca 1850's, (Canfield07).  Two piece convex button, coat size.

Button depicts the South Carolina state seal, the Palmetto tree with "SC", intended for South Carolina troops, this size was most commonly used by Citadel cadets.  Backmark:  "EXTRA / (star) (large star) (star) QUALITY  (star) (large star) (star)" dm inner solid ring, button only made in small coat or vest size, (ExtraQ10Vest).  Two part convex button, vest or cadet coat size.

Button depicts the seal of South Carolina, a palmetto tree over an oak log, symbolic of the Revolutionary War victory at Sullivans Island.  Backmark: "FINE  / (dot) QUALITY (dot) " dm inner ring, only made in small size, maker not indentified, likely Steele & Johnson, ca 1860, (Fine03Small).  Two part convex button, hat or sleeve size.

Button depicts the South Carolina state seal, the Palmetto tree with "SC", intended for South Carolina troops.  The Latin word in the motto, "opibusque" is misspelled "opirusque", a die makers error.  Backmark: "HORSTMANN & ALLIEN / (dot) NY (dot)" dm between two solid rings, inner ring of rays, Steele & Johnson produced ca 1860, (HorstmannA10).   Two part convex button, coat size.

South Carolina button, state seal palmetto tree with snake and "SC", Palmetto Guard, English import, Extra Gold Quality, (23.5mm)
Button depicts seal of South Carolina, the Palmetto tree with patriotic and military symbolism, wartime English manufacture intended for South Carolina troops.  The usual seal design has been modified by adding a snake and replacing the  letters  "SC" (South Carolina) with "CS" for Confederate States, a defiant statement.  Association with the specific South Carolina unit, "Palmetto Guard" is not absolutely proven, however it would have been intended for some well financed South Carolina unit after secession and during the war and was brought in through the blockade.  Backmark: " (graphic of lion head) / EXTRA GOLD (script) QUALY. (sic) ", likely Smith Kemp Wright 1862 to 1865, but not proven, (ExtraGold01).  Two part high convex button, large coat size.

Button depicts South Carolina state seal, the Palmetto tree with patriotic and military symbolism, wartime southern manufacture intended for South Carolina troops.  Backmark:  "SCHUR & BLAND / CHARLESTON" rmdc, crudely stamped, wartime "local", (Schur01).  Two part convex button, coat size, crude southern "local" manufacture, stampings are weak.

Kings Mountain Military was was a small cadet school formed 1855, Yorkville SC (modern day York South Carolina).  Button depicts globe, crossed sabers and SC.  Backmark:  "SCOVILL MF'G. CO. / WATERBURY." rmdc on a stippled field, ca 1850's, (ScovillM280).  Two part convex button,  cadet coat size.
