This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.



Confederate rifleman button, stippled "R", English wartime manufacture, H T & B, Manchester, (24mm)
Button depicts stippled  block "R", intended for Confederate riflemen, manufactured in England and smuggled through the blockade.  Riflemen were generally marksmen or sharpshooters.  Backmark:  "H T & B / (star) MANCHESTER (star)" dm on a very flat back, outer ring of dots, English manufacture, (Hammond01).  Two part convex button, coat size, well made English manufacture,  flat brass back has tendency to loosen and rotate, button was lightly gold washed.

Button depicts stippled  block "R", intended for Confederate riflemen, manufactured in England and smuggled through the blockade.  Riflemen were generally marksmen or sharpshooters.   Backmark: "W. DOWLER / (dot) SUPERIOR QUALITY (dot)" dm between rings of dots, made by English producer, (Dowler01).  Two part convex button, coat size, well constructed English manufacture.

Confederate rifleman button, Germanic "R" on plain background high convex with border, English import, Van Wart, (26mm)
Button depicts fancy Germanic style script "R" on a plain background, intended for Confederate riflemen, manufactured in England and smuggled through the blockade.  Riflemen were generally marksmen or sharpshooters. Button is very high convex and apparently designed to appear to be a three part staff button, but the fat rim is integral to the two part design.  Backmark: "VAN WART (dot) SON & Co.. (star)" dm two rings of dots, actual English maker not known, likely Smith Kemp Wright, buttons made too late to be issued, (VanWart03)Two part high convex button, coat size, well made English manufacture.

Confederate rifleman button, lined "R" on plain background with border, English wartime manufacture, plain back, (22.4mm)
Button depicts lined "R" in block style on plain background, imported through the blockade, intended for the Confederate riflemen.  Riflemen were generally marksmen or sharpshooters.  Backmark: blank with no contours, this is English manufacture, blank perhaps to disguise the origin, probably Smith Kemp Wright, (BlankEng03, coat).  Two part convex button, coat size, well made English button.
