Voltigeurs or Virginia button, eagle with "V", Scovills & Co, (14.6mm)
Button depicts eagle with "V" for Voltigeurs, a unit authorized during the Mexican War, employing rifles and light mounted artillery to fight in mountainous terrain.  The unit was disbanded after the Mexican War, around 1850.  Although these buttons were manufactured during the 1840's, they are much more commonly found in Civil War sites of the Virginia campaign, than Mexican War sites, and may have been drawn  from old stocks left in the arsenals, or a Virginia militia unit may have purchased them during the 1850's, using the "V" for "Virginia".  Backmark: "SCOVILLS & CO / (star) (star) (star)" rmdc, only used on small size button, ca 1840's & 1850's, (ScovillC01small).  Two part convex button, hat or sleeve size.
