This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me. All  items listed are believed to be authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.   Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.    This information is available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.



General service or militia button, eagle facing right beside shield, lined field no stars, one part flat, Best Plated London, (22mm)
Button depicts a patriotic eagle, and could be purchased by any militia units in the1830's and 1840's.  This pattern features eagle facing right beside a shield, 16 stars, wide oval inner border, outer rope border.  Backmark:  "BEST  PLATED (in script) / LONDON" dm single inner ring, flat one piece button, English producer 1820's or 1830's, (Best02B).  One part flat button, coat size.

Button depicts a patriotic eagle, and could be purchased by any militia units in the1830's and 1840's.  This pattern features eagle facing right surrounded by 17 stars.  Backmark:  "BEST  PLATED. / (star) LONDON. (star)" rm between two solid rings, convex back, English producer 1820's or 1830's, (Best03).  One part low convex button, coat size.

Button depicts a patriotic eagle, and could be purchased by any militia units in the1830's and 1840's.  This pattern features eagle facing right beside a shield, 16 stars, wide oval inner border, outer rope border.  Backmark:  "IMPERIAL / (star) STANDARD (star)", rmdc, stippled channel, backmark was a trademark denoting quality, and was probably manufactured in England, (Imperial01).  One part flat button, coat size.

Button depicts a patriotic eagle, and could be purchased by any militia units in the1830's and 1840's.  This pattern features eagle facing right beside a shield, 7 stars above, 6 stars below.  Backmark "SUPERIOR / (dot) STRONG PLATED (dot) " dm between two solid rings, likely English manufacture ca 1860, (SuperiorStrong01).  One part flat button, coat size.

Button depicts a patriotic eagle, over "US" and a oval wreath, design was approved in 1820 for US Army.  This pattern features eagle facing right surrounded by 17 stars.  Backmark:  "UNITED / (star) (dot) (star) STATES (star) (dot) (star) " rm between two rings of dots, flat back, ca 1820's, (UnitedSates01).  Two part flat button, coat size.

Button depicts a patriotic eagle, and could be purchased by any militia units in the1830's and 1840's.  This pattern features eagle facing right beside a shield, 7 stars above, 6 stars below.  Backmark "WARRANTED / (bough) / (double solid ring) / TREBLE / PLATED" dm, English manufacture ca 1830's, (Warranted02).  One part flat button, coat size.

Federal Infantry or militia button, eagle facing right, beside shield, lined shield with border, flat one part, blank back, (13.8mm)
Button depicts eagle beside a shield, originally intended for infantry 1820's, the shield was left blank, probably intended to have the regiment inscribed, few are inscribed most were relegated to militia use in the 1840's and 1850's.  Backmark blank back, one piece coin style button with fitted skin, (BlankNorth19Small).  One part flat button, hat size.
