Plates 332 to 334,
North Carolina state seal
Originals of the state seal two piece buckles were pre war manufacture and had die stamped disc,
but Confederates also made cast copies.
F1342
NC two piece Ames style
This example is cast, original should be die stamped.
Tongue keeper 48.7mm
Wreath keeper 48.9mm
Wreath height 49.9mm
The owner of this buckle died, the estate executor submitted this for evaluation. It was a small collection, most of the expensive buckles were fakes, most of the cheap ones (US buckles and breast plates) were real. I am certain this collector thought they were all real. Unfortunately he has taken information as to the sourcing to his grave. Shame on the fakers, none of these buckles were marked and I can find no evidence indicating such markings were removed. I don't know who made this but it sure does look similar to the Hanover Brass "repro".

North Carolina
state seal two piece buckle, Ames, manufactured by Hanover Brass
"This reproduction North Carolina plate was cast from an original in the
Virginia Historical Society collection. In 1981 Gary Williams, Hanover Brass
Foundry copied the Maryland-Steuart belt plate collection and other items such
as hat pins and badges. You can read about this in the 1981 quarterly (Virginia
Magazine of History and Biography). Vol. 89 No. 2. It tells of how the copies
will be on display and the originals will go behind the scenes for security.
This North Carolina plate was one beautiful belt plate along with many many
more. Gary cast these in the basement of the Historical Society. Pictured is the
magazine and write up (not forsale)."

North Carolina 2-Piece Belt
Buckle
Editor note: This was taken from a webpage, savage
station.com. This seller, Ric Savage, his real name is Frank Huguelet, says he withdrew it from his webpage and returned it
to its source. However he will not disclose who
made it or where he got it, yet he had more than one of these plates that he
attempted to market. At this point I do not know who
made this buckle. Hanover Brass denies being the maker and it is not shown
on civilwarfakes.com. It
is highly doubtful that this piece can be shown to be authentic.
