Currency, Virginia.
This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational
purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader. Some of the
relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other
collections and are not owned by the author. None of the items listed in
this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items
offered for sale. This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to
them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be
regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items. I
will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me.
All items listed are
believed to be original and authentic
to the Civil War or as otherwise described.
Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners
permission.
Any artillery or ordnance relics have been
disarmed and rendered safe.
Any weapons are pre 1898 antique weapons,
and are exempt from Federal regulation, no licenses or permits are required.
This information is
available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Currency was issued by the Virginia state government July 15, 1861,
"VIRGINIA TREASURY NOTE / The Faith of the Commonwealth is Pledged. / Receivable
in Payment of Taxes or other Public Dues. / Twelve months after date, the
Commonwealth of Virginia will pay bearer at the Treasury TWENTY DOLLARS with
interest at the rate of seven percent, payable until redeemed or advertised for
redemption./ RICHMOND ".
The note depicts Minerva standing at left, George Washington, at center, and Justice
seated with the Ten Commandments at right, black print on plain paper, green
overlay, blank back. Date is hand inscribed, serial number is hand

STATE SECURITIES".
The note depicts symbols of agriculture at left and right and centered on
the bottom, and graceful living upper center, black print, on plain paper, plain back. Date is
hand inscribed, "18" is printed in script style,
serial number is hand inscribed, signature is hand signed. Printing:
"Draper Welsh & Co. Philada". It is not clear when these were issued,
presumably this bank failed at the conclusion of the Civil War, this note was
finely printed by a northern printer, likely during reconstruction, late 1860's
or early 1870's.
