Percussion cap boxes.
This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational
purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader. Some of the
relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other
collections and are not owned by the author. None of the items listed in
this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items
offered for sale. This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to
them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be
regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items. I
will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me.
All items listed are
believed to be original and authentic
to the Civil War or as otherwise described.
Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners
permission.
Any artillery or ordnance relics have been
disarmed and rendered safe.
Any weapons are pre 1898 antique weapons,
and are exempt from Federal regulation, no licenses or permits are required.

available for research purposes, pictures may be used by permission only.

Small boxes to hold the percussion caps were issued along with the cartridge
boxes and were carried on the belt. The boxes were held on the belt
with two loops each sewed, latch tab is sewn onto the outer flap, brass finial
is round shaped with a point, inner flap with two side protectors sewed to the
flap covered the contents, main part of the box was flexible.

the top flap, brass finial is pear shaped with a point, inner flap with two side
protectors sewed to the flap covered the contents, main part
of the box was cut to provide a stiff inner compartment.
Manufacturer mark on the inner flap, "NEWARK NJ",
(Johnson pg. 200). This is believed to be
Edwin A Crossman, Newark, New Jersey, who received contracts for
20,000 sets of infantry implements in 1862, (Bazelon).

boxes and were carried on the belt. The 1861 boxes were held on the belt
with two loops each held with two rivets and sewed, latch tab is an integral extension of
the top flap, brass finial is pear shaped with a point, inner flap with two side
protectors sewed to the flap covered the contents, main part
of the box was cut to provide a stiff inner compartment.
Manufacturer mark on the inner flap, "GAYLORD / CHICOPEE / MASS.",
(Johnson pg. 200). Emerson Gaylord, Chicopee Massachusetts was a major
supplier of infantry accoutrements before and during the Civil War, (Bazelon).

boxes and were carried on the belt. The 1861 boxes were held on the belt
with two loops each held with two rivets and sewed,
latch tab is an integral extension of the top flap,

sewed to the flap covered the contents, main part of
the box was cut to provide a stiff inner compartment.

MAKER N.Y.", (Johnson pg. 200). Christian S. Storms, received
contracts for 45,000 infantry accoutrements in 1862, (Bazelon).

accoutrements in 1862 and 8,000 in 1863. (Bazelon).

a stiff inner compartment. Manufacturer mark on the inner flap,
"H. G. HAEDRICH". Henry G. Haedrich, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania had contracts for 23,000 infantry accoutrements in 1863, 20,000
in 1864, and 11,000 in 1865 (Bazelon).

Manufacturer mark on the inner flap: "S H YOUNG & CO / NEWARK NJ" and inspector
mark on front flap: "R WHITE / SUB INSPECTOR", (Johnson pg. 251).
Stephen H. Young, Newark, New Jersey, received a contract for 10,000 sets
of infantry accoutrements in 1865, (Bazelon).
