Cartridge box for rifled musket, 1861.

This is the "Ridgeway Reference Archive", a research tool for educational purposes only, and is provided at no cost to the reader.   Some of the relics listed are retained in the author's collection, most reside in other collections and are not owned by the author.  None of the items listed in this section are for sale, please refer to relicman.com sales listings for items offered for sale.  This is a work in progress, I list items as I get to them, there are many patterns that are not listed yet, this list will be regularly updated as I get pictures and descriptions for more items.  I will also correct mistakes, so if you see any please tell me.
All items listed are believed to be original and authentic to the Civil War or as otherwise described.
Any excavated relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission.
Any artillery or ordnance relics have been disarmed and rendered safe.
Any weapons are pre 1898 antique weapons, and are exempt from Federal regulation, no licenses or permits are required.

Federal Cartridge box, Pattern of 1861 for .69 cal. elongated ball, Crossman.
Cartridge box is "Pattern 1861", it was ornamented with the brass "US" boxplate.  This pattern has two inside flaps covering the tins and the front implements pouch.  Belt straps are centered, sewn and riveted.  Latch tab is sewn only, brass finial is round with a point.  Two iron buckles are sewn and riveted.   Maker mark appears on middle flap, "CROSSMAN / MAKER / NEWARK N.J.",  (Johnson pg. 200).  Edwin A Crossman,  Newark, New Jersey, received contracts for 20,000 cartridge boxes in 1862, (Bazelon).  Box measures 8.2in. X 1.8in. X 4.8in. (for .69 cal. elongated ball).

(for .69 cal. elongated ball).  Belt loops intact, latch tab is intact, finial and buckles intact, tins intact, both inside flaps are intact, front flap intact, correct brass "US" boxplate is present,  leather is flexible.

Cartridge box is "Pattern 1861", it was ornamented with the brass "US" boxplate.  This pattern has two inside flaps covering the tins and the front implements pouch.  Belt straps are centered, sewn and riveted.  Latch tab is sewn only, brass finial is round with a point. 
Two iron buckles are sewn only.   Maker mark appears twice on both side panels, "L.S. BAKER / (graphic) NEW YORK,  (Johnson pg. 200).  Laura S. Baker, widow of John A Baker who died in 1862, received contracts for 15,000 .58 caliber cartridge boxes in 1862, (Bazelon).  Box measures 7.2in. X 1.7in. X 5.2in. (for .58 cal. elongated ball).

M1025     Federal Cartridge box, Pattern of 1861 for .58 cal. elongated ball, Baker, with SNY belt plate, arrow hooks right handed, pattern 549 with belt, and SNY cartridge boxplate, pattern 550.
  Cartridge box is "Pattern 1861", it was ornamented with the brass "US" boxplate.  This pattern has two inside flaps covering the tins and the front implements pouch.  Belt straps are centered, sewn and riveted.  Latch tab is sewn only, brass finial is round with a point.  Two iron buckles are sewn only.   Maker mark appears twice on both side panels, "L.S. BAKER / (graphic) NEW YORK,  (Johnson pg. 200).  Laura S. Baker, widow of John A Baker who died in 1862, received contracts for 15,000 .58 caliber cartridge boxes in 1862, (Bazelon).  Box measures 7.2in. X 1.7in. X 5.2in. (for .58 cal. elongated ball).  The SNY buckle is unique die pattern, thin letters the neck in the "S" is very thin, and is only found configured with arrow hooks. The boxplate is matching die and configured with iron loop hooks.  Plates are reference: O'Donnell & Campbell plate 549 and 550.  All four pieces, box, boxplate, belt and belt plate were discovered together.

(for .58 cal. elongated ball).  Belt loops intact, fastening tab intact with a tear, finial and buckles intact, tins intact with internal panels missing, both inside flaps are intact, front flap intact, brass "US" plate is missing,  leather is flexible, small hole in back is from wear, representative example.

Cartridge box is "Pattern 1861", it was ornamented with the brass "US" boxplate.  This pattern has two inside flaps covering the tins and the front implements pouch.  Belt straps are centered, sewn and riveted.  Latch tab is sewn only, brass finial is round with a point.  Two iron buckles are sewn only.  Maker mark appears twice on both side panels, "C.S. STORMS / MAKER N.Y.",  (Johnson pg. 200).  Christian S. Storms, received contracts for 15,000 .58 caliber cartridge boxes in 1862, (Bazelon).  Box measures 7.2in. X 1.7in. X 5.2in. (for .58 cal. elongated ball).  Cartridge boxplate is one of the Gaylord patterns with small proportions "US" (O'Donnell Plate 507) and is tight, appears to be original to this box.  Belt loops intact with one rivet missing, fastening tab is intact, finial and buckles intact, tins intact, both inside flaps intact, front flap intact, correct brass "US" plate is included, leather is flexible.

Cartridge box is "Pattern 1861", it was ornamented with the brass "US" boxplate.  This pattern has two inside flaps covering the tins and the front implements pouch.  Belt straps are centered, sewn and riveted.  Latch tab is sewn only, brass finial is round with a point.  Two iron buckles are sewn only.   Maker mark appears twice on both side panels, "C.S. STORMS / MAKER N.Y.",  (Johnson pg. 200).  Christian S. Storms, received contracts for 15,000 .58 caliber cartridge boxes in 1862, (Bazelon).  Box measures 7.2in. X 1.7in. X 5.2in. (for .58 cal. elongated ball).  Cartridge boxplate is one of the Gaylord patterns with small proportions "US" and may have been applied to this box after manufacture.  Shoulder plate strap appears to be original, has a tear and is partial, shoulder plate is missing.  Belt loops intact, fastening tab is missing, finial and buckles intact, tins intact, inside flap over the tins is intact, flap over the implement pouch is missing and implement pouch is torn, front flap intact, correct brass "US" plate is included,  leather is flexible, shoulder strap present but torn, representative example.

(for .58 cal. elongated ball).   Cartridge box plate is "NHSM" New Hampshire State Militia, (O'Donnell plate 597.)  Belt loops intact, fastening tab intact, finial and buckles intact, buckles appear to have been reattached, tins intact, inside flap over the tins is intact, flap over the implement pouch intact, front flap intact,  "NHSM" plate appears to be original to this box,  leather is flexible,
