P1704     US oval belt plate, left handed, stud hooks, Gaylord pattern 505

Use of the US oval plate was approved with the regulation of 1839, most of this "large" size were manufactured 1850's through end of the Civil War.  Designed for a 2 inch belt, the plate was die struck on thin brass sheet, solder filled.  E. Gaylord manufactured these plates with die featuring smaller proportion letters, well formed and struck, "U" with proportionately rounded bottom, "S" with rounded openings, sharp squared serifs on both letters.  Buckle is configured as a left handed buckle, stud brass hooks under the "S", with oval washers filled with lead, covered by a brass cap, thick hook bent and tapered to a point.  Dug plate has clean appearance, original convex curve with minor dings and scratches, stud hooks intact, solder filling intact with minor flaking.  Recovered: central Virginia not confirmed.   Plate measures 54mm X 85mm (approx.).
