P1717     US oval belt plate, right handed, arrow hooks, pattern 507, on belt

Use of the US oval plate was approved with the regulation of 1839, most of this "large" size were manufactured 1850's through end of the Civil War.  Designed for a 2 inch belt, the plate was die struck on thin brass sheet, solder filled.  Manufacturer is not known although the details are very similar to the E. Gaylord pattern with slight differences in the shape of the "S".  The die features smaller proportion letters, well formed and struck, "U" with proportionately rounded bottom, "S" with rounded openings, sharp squared serifs on both letters.  Buckle is configured as a right handed buckle, brass arrow hooks under the "U", with narrow beveled tongue with blunt end.  Marks on belt:  "R WHITE / US ORDNANCE / INSPECTOR" "S H YOUNG  & CO  NEWARK"   Unissued plate on original belt, made late in the conflict but did not get issued.  Recovered: from surplus stocks.   Plate measures 53mm X 85mm   (approx.).
Ref: O'Donnell & Campbell, Plate 507 (right handed buckle, arrow hooks)  with original belt              $600.
