P1739     US oval belt plate, right handed, arrow hooks, Boyd & Sons pattern 497    

Use of the US oval plate was approved with the regulation of 1839, most of this "large" size were manufactured 1850's through end of the Civil War.  Designed for a 2 inch belt, the plate was die struck on thin brass sheet, solder filled.  Die pattern is attributed to Boyd & Sons, Boston, and features thick slightly boxy "U", "S" with long narrow openings, typically strong bold strike.  Plate is configured as a right handed buckle, brass arrow hooks under the "U", arrow hooks are pointed, tongue is flat and narrow without bevel.  Nondug plate with original convex curve with minor dings and scratches, arrow hooks intact.  Plate measures  56mm X 87mm (approx.).
