P1749     US oval belt plate, left handed, stud hooks, pattern 507

Use of the US oval plate was approved with the regulation of 1839, most of this "large" size were manufactured 1850's through end of the Civil War.  Designed for a 2 inch belt, the plate was die struck on thin brass sheet, solder filled.   Manufacturer is not known although the details are very similar to the E. Gaylord pattern with slight differences in the shape of the "S".  The die features smaller proportion letters, well formed and struck, "U" with proportionately rounded bottom, "S" with rounded openings, sharp squared serifs on both letters.  Buckle is configured as a left handed buckle, stud brass hooks under the "S", with oval washers filled with lead caps, thick hook bent and tapered to a point. Dug plate has clean appearance, original convex curve with minor dings and scratches, stud hooks, intact, solder filling intact with minor flaking only.  Recovered: not known.  Plate measures 54mm x 84mm approx.).
