P1772     US oval belt plate, right handed, arrow hooks, Gaylord pattern 506

Use of the US oval plate was approved with the regulation of 1839, most of this "large" size were manufactured 1850's through end of the Civil War.  Designed for a 2 inch belt, the plate was die struck on thin brass sheet, solder filled.  E. Gaylord manufactured these plates with die featuring smaller proportion letters, well formed and struck, "U" with proportionately rounded bottom, "S" with rounded openings, sharp squared serifs on both letters.  Buckle is configured as a right handed buckle, brass arrow hooks under the "U", with narrow tongue sometimes milled to a bevel.  Dug buckle is attractive, ding in upper left corner, otherwise straight and whole, solder filling is solid with some flaking, all hooks intact, flat narrow tongue is not milled.  Recovered: Amelia County, Virginia (Saylors Creek), by Tom Bryant.  Plate measures 55mm x 86mm (approx.).
