Weapons of the Civil War
All weapons listed on this webpage are strictly manufactured before 1898, and are considered unsafe for actual use. These are antique collectible weapons of the Civil War (most are pre 1865, unless I state otherwise) and actual firing of these weapons is not recommended for any purpose whatsoever! Because these are all "pre 1898" weapons, no licenses are required for ownership, but common sense and good judgment are real good things to have.
W0722 Model
1863 Rifle Musket Type I Springfield 1863, with bayonet

This was an "improvement" of the standard 1861
contract rifle, the "C" shape of the hammer was replaced with a
contoured and beveled hammer, the nipple bolster is flat, barrel bands are
rounded with tightening screws, barrel springs used in the Model 1861 were
replaced with internal springs, to secure the bands and the ramrod, the bulge
was removed from the ramrod. Performance was unsatisfactory because the bands
too easily worked loose, so the design was discontinued after a relatively short
field trial. Manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Mass Lock is marked
"1863" behind the hammer, and eagle head and "US /
SPRINGFIELD" in front, Barrel is marked "VP" over eagle head,
"1863", (this is the correct Springfield eagle, Whisker pg. 37).
Additional marks on barrel and stock are rack numbers.
Buttplate is marked "US, Three bands each marked "U" No inspector
cartouches are visible on wood opposite the lock. Mechanics fully functional,
metal clean, three leaf sight is original, ramrod is original, bore rifling is
crisp, wood is good overall, minor dings and scratches, strap hooks intact,
matching dates on barrel and lock are crisp, excellent example with correct
bayonet.
Barrel length 40 inches.
