The most likely candidate is "Ashland Gray" a Virginia militia unit formed in 1860 and served with the 15th Virginia. A picture has surfaced showing an identified member of this unit wearing a hat with very similar letters "AG". Button depicts state seal of Georgia, "GMI / CADET / 1851", Georgia Military Institute "GMI" was located in Marietta Georgia, formed in 1851, burned in 1864, and the cadets saw considerable action in the 1864 Atlanta campaign. Apparently when supplies ran short, the cadets attempted to make their own buttons by casting copies using recycled pewter, casting quality is extremely crude and there is considerable variation. Backmark: blank back one piece white metal casting, integral shank with moldseam running through the back and the shank, back is slightly concave, field cast GMI buttons were probably made by the cadets in 1864, (BlankSouthern131). Button depicts the seal of South Carolina, a palmetto tree over an oak log, symbolic of the Revolutionary War victory at Sullivans Island. The usual seal design has been modified by adding a snake and replacing the letters "SC", South Carolina, with "CS" for Confederate States, a defiant statement. Association specifically with the Palmetto Guard is not absolutely proven, however even if not this unit, it would have been intended for a well financed South Carolina unit after secession and during the war and was brought in through the blockade.
