Federal shoulder plate, similar to Odonnell illsustration 464 Plate4500-Federal-Shoulder-Eagle-FAKE-FANTASY-REPRODUCTIONThis is an investigative report, all items presented on this page are judged by the author to have been manufactured after the Civil War and are not authentic to the Civil War. This is an opinion only. There will be many collectors, dealers and others who will disagree with this finding, including some who are knowledgeable, reputable and honorable. There are uncertainties associated with many of these pieces, this is a judgement based on the evidence, experience, and sometimes gut feel, seldom is evidence 100%. Some of the items presented in this study have been examined, some are simply pictures submitted to the author or taken from sales or other listings. Second opinions may or may not have been obtained and some of those opinions may conflict. The purpose of this study is to present as much evidence as possible, and for the more controversial or uncertain items to present a fair and balanced analysis and let the reader conclude. This is an opinion, the author does not guarantee that these items are fake, nor does the author guarantee that they are not fake.

P3598 ### P3598 Federal round shoulderPlate, regulation 1826, eagle,Pattern 464.Plate depictsPatriotic eagle, and was used by the Federal army as well as the states. ShoulderPlate is round following the Federal Regulation of 1826, most were manufactured 1850's through end of the Civil War, and was used as ornamentation on the shoulder strap. This diePattern depicts eagle with some feathers are very detailed and some are not, eagles feet seem to have extra joints, the arrow tail feathers are dots.Plate measures 65mm, approx. Dating thisPlate is uncertain. O'Donnell showed an example of thisPlate in his book but is now telling collectors that he thinks it is a reproduction, fake or fantasy. The owners of thePlate at the time ofPublication, who are reputable and honorable, still believe that thePlate is real. The examplePublished is noted as having had the hooks replaced, which confuses the issue considerably. Other examples have been examined, which also seem to haveProblems, it is the opinion of this author that thisPattern is indeed a reproduction, fake or fantasy. Ref: O'Donnell & Campbell,Plate 449.Plate is configured as an enlisted shoulderPlate, two iron hooks are formed on a loop with ends bent upward. Dating thisPlate is uncertain. Hooks arePresent but run right to left in a fashion for a boxplate, not the usual configuration for a shoulderPlate. In addition, the solder filling is very irregular.Possible reproduction, fake or fantasy sold without warranty.

P3495...This plate was culled out of a collection that was contaminated by too many ebay purchases. The collection was a disaster, way too many fakes, and was hard to cut through the smoke. This was in it. I guess somebody figured out that if the plate is damaged enough it will be accepted. This one is certainly damaged, but in this condition even a real piece will not be worth much.
