Plate1851-Federal-Oval-US-512 Federal oval plate, US, medium size, waist belt plate with brass hooks,. Plate is oval, with US. Use of the oval plate was authorized by the Regulation of 1839, most medium size plates were manufactured 1840's, and were intended for use by Federal enlisted troops, but many were also issued to state units. Waist plates were mounted on leather belts worn outside of the jacket to hold the cartridge box, cap box, and other accoutrements. Cartridge boxplates of the same die design were attached to the flap of the cartridge box. Manufacture is not determined, likely the work of an amateur craftsman. Plate is Oval is brass sheet and may be stamped with a border, back is thin iron, letters were independently stamped, letters held in place with wire piercing the oval and the iron back, brass hooks seem to be soldered to the iron, this is likely the work of an amateur craftsman and does not follow any of the conventions used by other makers.
