Alabama sword plates, Mullinax illustration 215. Hanover Brass used different examples for their master and made multiple versions. The example stated as Butafuso collection, was actually owned originally by Hicklen and Mullinax, sold to Ridgeway, a picture of it is shown in the Ridgeway Reference center. It was eventually sold to Bill Hays and ended up with Butafuso. Along the way it got copied. However that plate was rough condition and pitted, Williams eventually found a better example to copy and most of the fakes are from the better original.

P3216 ###
F1216 Alabama sword plate manufactured by Hanover BrassPlate measures 50.6mm X 87.4mmEditor Note: This was given to me from Gary Williams, Hanover Brass, it was copied from a plate that I owned at the time. The brazed hook was missing from the original, you can see the impression of the break, a stock tongue was then affixed in its place. The dug original had a good bit of ground action, hence the detail is very weak on this copy.

P2831 ### Hanover Brass repro: Alabama Sword Belt Plate.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSAL9 Plate 215 (Alabama Sword Belt Plate) bench no. 319. 49 x 87mm. Marked GW. I have cast hundreds of this plate and they all look the same. Remember 2 mm's smaller. The original of this belt plate is in the Virginia Historical Society. The original was not a sand cast plate and the back is smooth with applied hook. You will find very little file marks if any on the original. Alabama, Virginia, Mississippi and others were probably cast using the wax process, then struck in a die to sharpen the detail. The benchmark number should be clear of any sand marks. The original was stamped after it was cast. My reproduction has a sand texture in the benchmark number.
