P2834 ### Hanover Brass repro: Alabama Belt Plate.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSAL12 Plate 216 (1859-1861 Alabama Belt Plate.) 54 x 86mm. Marked GW under the hook or near the back border. The original is in the Virginia Historical Society collection. There should never be a problem with any of the reproduction oval belt plates that I cast. The original was die stamped and lead filled. My reproductions of this and the other oval plates are solid cast brass. All of my fifty one years of collecting I have never seen a solid cast oval Alabama that was original. The originals are all die stamped and lead filled. I cast this Alabama and applied lead over the back of 50 of them in 1981. This type plate is discussed in the lead backing section.

P2838 ### Hanover Brass repro: Alabama Belt Plate.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSAL16 Plate 216 (Alabama Belt Plate) 54 x 86mm's. Limited edition of 50 in 1982. Solid brass, brazed on hooks and lead coated. Thin coat of lead over the flat back to make this plate look lead filled just like the original. I cast a limited edition of 50 buckles. I do see these turn up as original sometimes. Pay close attention to the front hook and two knobs. The original knob was flat like a washer and lead coated. The front hook is different on the original. Look for shinny brass spots somewhere on the back where the lead did not take and the edge where the lead is above the rim. This Reproduction Alabama is in the Charles Burnette collection and he did not want the GW that I stamped in the knob when he purchased this buckle. The brass and lead age is 1982 till now.
