P2885 ### Hanover Brass repro: North Carolina 6th Regt.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSNC10 Plate 344 (1861 6th North Carolina Regt.) 50 x 73mm's. Cast and applied hooks just as the original. Back in 1971 Fred Felt and Eddie Wilder made up a 6th Inf. pattern for me to cast fifty buckles for them. They wanted them not finished, in the rough. Believe it or not they did a great job making the master pattern. All was made by handwork and very close to the original. They cut the hooks from copper and soldered them to the back just as the original. I see these faked often today. What to look for is the buckle is thicker than the original and the black paint id different. These are very close and Fred Felt passed away a couple years ago but you can still contact Eddie Wilder and ask his blessing or not. He attends most civil war shows and is very active in relic hunting. I consider him a friend and truthful person. His also relic hunts with Bob B. This reproduction is in the Charles Burnette collection and aged with time.

P3344 ### North Carolina 6th Inf
F1344 North Carolina 6th InfPlate measures 49.7mm X 71.5mm Plate has cast in hooks The owner of this buckle died, the estate executor submitted this for evaluation. It was a small collection, most of the expensive buckles were fakes, most of the cheap ones (US buckles and breast plates) were real. I am certain this collector thought they were all real. Unfortunately he has taken information as to the sourcing to his grave.
