Ohio, sword plate, this passed through the hands of several high collectors. Ridgeway bought it and it was discovered to be a fake, thanks to Mike ODonnell. The tipping point, was that it was simply too good of a piece, matching keeper patina, nothing ever comes out of the ground in parts looking like this. All of the previous owners made good on their commitment, and it now resides in the junk box of the first guy who bought this from the supposed digger. Gary Williams did provide the community with an explanation, but only years later, after it had passed through and burned several good collectors.

P2887 ### Hanover Brass repro: Ohio Sword Belt Plate.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # USOH1 Plate 679 (1861-1865 Ohio Sword Belt Plate.) 49 x 79mm. Marked GW and also a Y in the center back. Original is in the John Bracken collection. The flaw to look for in this plate is the Y in the center of the back. I also show my reproduction with the same applied hook as the original. This is the one that they would fake. I only apply the hook at the customers request. Most all my reproductions have the cast hook. That hook should be no problem because it is nothing like the stamped brass applied hook. My reproduction applied hook is also much thicker than the thin original hook. SIZE!!
