P2896 ### Hanover Brass repro: South Carolina Belt Plate.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSSC9 Plate 375 (1845-1860 South Carolina Belt Plate.) 61 x 78mm's. Original is in the Virginia Historical Society collection. The original of this plate was die stamped. Even though my reproduction looks very close to the original it is sand cast and thicker than the die stamped plate. This reproduction is in the Charles Burnette collection. It has been there since 1981. I have cast several of this type plates for collectors and sometimes I see them turn up fake. It is a good looking plate but way too thick. The South Carolina picture is correct, just as the original. I usually cast with three hook backing.
