P2924 ### Hanover Brass repro: Virginia Breast Plate.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSVA19 Plate 436 (1855-1861 Virginia Breast Plate.) 64mm's. Marked GW before they leave the foundry. Original is in the John Bracken collection. This is probably one of the closest plates that I have cast to look original. I saw one of these reproductions with the pin on the back sell for $12,000 and when I told the dealer I made that plate he sold it anyway. Look at the pin on the back. I made that separate and soldered it to the plate. The original is die-stamped and thin brass. My reproduction is thicker and cast in a sand mold. This reproduction is in the Charles Burnette collection and one of my best castings. I only made a few back in the 1980's. Maybe a half dozen with the original type pin. Look for weight and thickness if you see one because I see this Virginia faked and sell for big dollars.
