This plate was bought in 1986, from a very reputable dealer, and held in the Ridgeway collection for about 20 years. Plate was photographed by O'Donnell in the late 1980's. At the time, the plate published in Mullinax book was also in the Ridgeway collection. That plate was a marriage and average quality. At the time O'Donnell considered this to be the superior example of the two, however, when the book came out several years later the marriage was used and not this plate. By then the marriage had been sold, and this example with the green patina had been retained. Around 2006 it was sold, it was questioned and recalled around 2008 when more information about fakes came out, the piece was thorougly analyzed, multiple experts examined and it was ruled a fake. The biggest flaw is that it was too good, perfect fit, perfect matching patina both halves. It was also too green. The wreath does not match the pictures in Mullinax book because that example is a marriage. So O'Donnell never found a correct original to photograph. Hanover Brass states that their repro was copied from example in McAdam collection. O'Donnell had access to that collection so one wonders why he passed up the correct and original match to use the marriage. The green plate does match flaws in both the tongue and wreath with Hanover Brass pictures. It also measures smaller than the mariage example in the book. An example of recent production was obtained from Hanover Brass and the two examples seem to match exactly, size and flaws. So it has been ruled a fake and has been recalled from the market, and resides in relicman box of fakes fantasies and repros. Authentication is difficult, given that there are no photographs of a correct example.

P2650 ### Hanover Brass repro: CS two part, Script CS.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CS2P14 Plate 002 Script CS Two Piece Belt Plate. 49 x 84/wreath ht.49mm. GW stamped in the back. You see this buckle in both yellow and red metal. Other people casting buckles use this wreath to cast their CS Plate 001 type . They use most of my patterns to make their casting. Some do not take my GW off the back. I have made many many of these. Check out flaws for you to know the difference in an original or reproduction. The bottom of the wreath has two good flaws to go by.
