P3057 ###
F1057 Another Virginia style CS two piece, is this piece good or bad? Flat dimensions of just over 48mm X just over 81mm. it corresponds with Plate 009 in Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates expanded edition by Steve E Mullinax. I bought this item back in mid 90s at a show in Nashville. I'm thinning out of my collection for some new items. Please write if you have any questions. You will have 5-day inspection period. If for any reason, you dont like this item during this time period.I will refund your money back to you, As long as the buckle is returned in the same condition as sent. Please write with if you have any questions. I have had questions about my private auction policy. The reason for the use of private auctions is my bidders have received bogguss second chance offers. This has happened more than once. I feel that it is my obligation to protect my bidders. P1635 ###
FP1635 CS two part buckle, Virginia style Two part Virginia style is noted for the straight back, somewhat fat rounded letters, laurel leaf wreath, generally relatively well made probably for officers. Example is dirt covered, likely a marriage. The tongue appears to have been bent severely, then straightened giving the appearance of a step up in the back not normally seen. The tongue could be repaired at the neck. Recovered: not known Tongue keeper 47.0mm, wreath keeper 47.0mm, wreath height 47.1mm Ref: Mullinax (Expanded Edition) Plate 011 or 012 likely fake. The tongue could be real but is likely bent and repaired. The wreath could be repro, it shares some similarity to Hanover Brass pattern, CS2P10, but is not definite. Editor note: This buckle was submitted for evaluation and rejected. So is this fake or real, comments and opinions solicited.

FP1639 CS two part buckle, Virginia style Two part Virginia style is noted for the straight back, somewhat fat rounded letters, laurel leaf wreath, generally relatively well made probably for officers. Example is dirt covered, likely a marriage and likely repaired. Recovered: not known. Tongue keeper 46.7mm, wreath keeper 46.8mm, wreath height 48.0mm Ref: Mullinax (Expanded Edition) Plate 011 or 012 likely fake Authenticity is not definite, my judgment is that this piece is more likely to be repro than real. Patina is attractive, but the brass has been coated to achieve consistent color. I believe I detect a repair in the neck of the wreath. The tongue shows significant depression on the back of the bar, which means it is a second or third generation copy. Editor note: This buckle was submitted for evaluation and rejected. So is this fake or real, comments and opinions solicited.

FP1640 CS two part buckle, Virginia style two part Virginia style is noted for the straight back, somewhat fat rounded letters, laurel leaf wreath, generally relatively well made probably for officers. Example is dirt covered, likely a marriage. Recovered: not known Tongue keeper 46.9mm, wreath keeper 47.0mm, wreath height 48.5mm Ref: Mullinax (Expanded Edition) Plate 011 or 012 likely fake. Authenticity is not definite, my judgment is that this piece is more likely to be repro than real. If real it appears to be a marriage, the two halves have very different ground action and color characteristics. Both halves share the appearance and patina of modern castings and may be wax cast and not sand cast. Editor note: This buckle was submitted for evaluation and rejected. So is this fake or real, comments and opinions solicited.

P2645 ### Hanover Brass repro: CS two part, Virginia Style.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CS2P9 Plate 009 (Virginia Style) CS Two Piece Belt Plate. (variant) 47 x 80/wreath ht.45 GW stamped in the back of tongue. This CS looks just like Plate 009 but is smaller. We talked about this before. How foundries would send out plates to be cast. They would make several different master patterns which made several different sizes of the same plate. Also one worker filing a buckle may cut a little more off than someone else filing another of the same buckle. You need to study for flaws to use as a guide to tell original from reproduction.

This plate is larger and all information will be the same as the others of this type. The original of this CS was dug by Danny Watts from the Cold Harbor battlefield. He still has this plate. Study the face flaws.
