Confederate, two part plate, FAKE-FANTASY-REPRODUCTION
Confederate two part plate, CS, Mullinax illustrations 066 and 067, artillery style This is the pattern made by Gary Williams, with ring around the letters, Original plate, item P0897 is photographed. The original plate was tongue only, at the time the tongue was copied, Hanover Brass used a wreath from another pattern. A wreath was eventually married to this buckle, this was done after the moulds were made. So only the tongue will match, the wreath used by Hanover Brass came from a different buckle.

This is the original from which Gary Williams made his master pattern....Confederate waist belt plate, two part, CS, keepers and wreath are plain artillery style, square proportions when clasped, cast, Confederate wartime manufacture.Buckle depicts CS and is a two part tongue and wreath plate used in the Confederacy. This style is noted for the unusually tall proportions giving it the appearance of nearly square proportions when both halves are assembled together. It was adapted from the earlier Federal style artillery plate, also featuring a plain unadorned wreath, but which featured much smaller rectangle proportions. Plate is thick casting, tongue disc bar is curved behind the disc, wreath has a channel. Plate measurements: tongue keeper 67mm, wreath keeper 67.5mm, wreath, 51.6mm. Dug plate, tongue and wreath have been married from two buckles, each part is correct style and fit. Recovered: Fredericksburg, Virginia. Ref: Mullinax Expanded Edition, Plates 066 or 067.Authenticity note. This piece shows the definite ring around the letters and the slash in the S which is also in many Hanover Brass fakes! However there is a good bit of difference in the details on the back, and this plate is much larger than the Hanover Brass fakes. I have been able to confirm that this piece was owned by Shannon Pritchard in the 1990's, Shannon allowed Gary Williams to copy it. (Shannon now apologizes for ever letting GW touch this or any other buckle he ever owned, but that is a story for another time), Williams has also confirmed that he copied this tongue from Pritchard and did not copy the wreath. So this is the original from which Hanover Brass made the master for their repro and will be the only authentic example of this buckle configured with this funky ring and slash etc.

P2647 ### Hanover Brass repro: CS two part, Artillery Style.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CS2P11 Plate 066 (Artillery Style) CS Two Piece Belt Plate. 65 x 77/wreath ht.49 Marked GW on the back. If you look closely at the center you will see a ring going around the CS letters. The casters used a plain type Artillery two piece for the master. They pressed the CS into the sand mold and doing this left a shallow ring around the CS letters. Study the plate for flaws to use. Most of these plates had a high copper content making them red in color.

P3027 ###
F1027 CS Artillery 2 piece Belt Buckle Plate (CS circle stamped in plain tongue) manufactured by Hanover Brass (Plate 066 or 067) This reproduction CS Artillery Belt plate is a MUST for anyone who enjoys civil war belt buckles. It is cast in red brass and as close as you will get to the original. A rare belt plate. Artillery style. Note how the S is positioned . The CS was positioned individually in the sand mold causing the letters not to be straight. You can see the outer circle where they stamped the CS in the sand mold. This is a different type than the other listing. Marked as a reproduction. Wear or display. Most of these plates had a high copper content making them red in color. Editor Note: A minor point, this looks more like Plate 67 than Plate 66 as indicated, the difference primarily being the fatness of the S  Noteworthy is this ring around the CS and the slash running through the middle of the S . It should be noted that the slash in the S is weak on the ebay photograph, suggesting that casting may have been cleaned up somewhat. There will be variations like this one casting to the next.
