F1142 Atlanta style CSA (another pattern) manufactured by Hanover BrassThis reproduction CSA Belt plate is a MUST for anyone who enjoys civil war belt buckles. It is cast in red brass and as close as you will get to the original. The original was dug by Gary Williams from the Cold Harbor battlefield in 1970. A very nice reproduction to wear or collect. Looking at the front you think you have the real deal. Marked as a reproductionSource ebay auction by jaglady00 6/1/06, Atlanta Style CSA Belt Buckle Plate Item number: 6633172056Editor note: jaglady00 is Hanover Brass, items sold as reproductions. They say in their ads that these are marked as reproduction. However there are no such marks in the picture and many are showing up in collections without such marks. Even those that are marked are marked as lightly as possible so that any identifying marks can be easily removed or obscured. Some manufacturing flaws in the pattern may be unique, but will only be recognized by a minority of collectors, and even many of those can be easily altered or obscured as part of the manufacturing or finishing process. This is one of the most faked of patterns, isn't it remarkable that so many of these repros ended up being fakes!

P2620 ### Hanover Brass repro: CSA rectangle belt plate.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSGP11 Plate 086 (Atlanta Arsenal) Rectangular CSA Belt Plate. 47 x 68mm. 2mm smaller than the original. The original of this CSA was dug by Gary Williams on the Cold Harbor battlefield in 1970 and is in the Charles Burnette collection. This plate needs a lot of study because it is faked a lot. Pick out one of the many casting flaws that was in the original and use this for your reference. Also remember that this plate is 2mm smaller. Take note around the hooks to see if there is rub marks showing in the casting. Originals have no rub marks on the back. GW stamped in several places on the back but can be sand blasted off.
