| P1490 ### FP1490 CSA rectangle belt plate, Virginia style Plate measures 47mm X 68mmEditor note: This plate made a brief appearance on my webpage, I was initially fooled by it, but did discover it to be a fake before it was sold, so it was returned to its source and I did not sell it. One of the ironies is that while it was on my webpage, one guy who thought he had owned it previously, called me to straighten me out on the provenance of the plate, he claimed it came from a famous site and was dug by one of the well known early diggers, he was trying to help me. This points out the hideous nature of these things, there are a bunch of these plates floating around, and they all look almost alike, so once accepted they tend to proliferate. The fellow that called me was not in the ownership chain for this particular plate (lucky him) but he no doubt did own one of these and that chicken may come home yet to roost. It is not the dash over the dot that is distinct for this plate, when this plate was copied the hooks were in the way, so the back had to be completely reworked. You can see where this plate has been rubbed extensively to rework the back. I have received confirmation from Gary Williams that he made this plate, Gary posted an extensive dissertation on the Northern Virginia Relic Hunters fakes forum explaining how he had made this reproduction plate that relicman was trying to sell! | P2616 ### Hanover Brass repro: CSA rectangle belt plate. This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation: Photo # CSGP6 Figure 312 Kerksis (Virginia Style) CSA Belt Plate.47 x 70mm. GW stamped in the back. These Virginia style CSA plates always have a raised lump over the A period and two raised lumps on each side of the C. This is a thin plate and the hooks are cast straight. When hammered over it causes the lumps. When they filed the face and hit the lumps it caused them to show more on some than others. Pick a flaw because this plate is a popular fake pattern. The back of the plate should be clean around the base of each hook and no marks where the sand has been smoothed out. The back should have a sand paper look with hooks sitting on top. My sand is so fine that when I press my hook into the sand mold the sand will seperate and I have to smooth it out leaving marks in the sand. This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation: Photo # CSGP7 Plate 107 (Virginia Style) CSA Belt Plate. 47 x 69mm. This is 2mm smaller than the original. GW stamped in the back. Most of the Virginia style plates are yellow brass or appears yellow in color. The same history as the other Virginia style plates is the same for this plate. I pictured the back of the pattern without the hooks so you can see the rubbed marks that you need to look for. When I make a pattern from the original, it leaves an impression in the sand where the hooks are. I fill it in with sand and smooth it out. The front hook on the original of this pattern was broken as you can see on the pattern picture. This leaves the marks to look for under all my reproductions. The dot over the period between the C and S is on all the plates of this pattern. You cannot use this as a reference. Also, all the Virginia styles have the same type hooks. IT WAS ALSO DISPLAYED IN A CIVIL WAR MUSEUM COLLECTION FOR THE LAST 12 YEARS.IT IS THE VIRGINIA STYLE.IT HAS A GREAT AGE PATINA. IT IS VERY CRUDE CAST, AND THE BACK IS ESPECIALLY CRUDE AND 'UNFINISHED'.FACE IS ACTUALLY VERY PRETTY, WITH CASTING FLAWS ON THE RIM.THERE ARE FOUR OR FIVE ' BUMPS'WHERE THE HOOKS WERE HAMMERED DOWN AFTER THE PLATE WAS FINISHED, WHICH RAISED THE BRASS ON THE FACE JUST A TAD!(SEE REFERENCE TO THIS IN MULLINAX'S BOOK). IT IS APPROX. 47 X 67 MM, IF I AM MEASURING CORRECTLY, MAKING IT ONE OF THE SMALLER RECTANGLES. THE BACK HAS THREE OF THE SHORTER VERSION HOOKS, INSTEAD OF THE LONGER, THINNER, MORE SHARP POINTED ONES. (AGAIN, REFER TO MULLINAX'S BOOK). NON- DUG BELT BUCKLE Item number: 6625099687 Editor note: I note that the seller is a respected dealer but I respectfully disagree with the explanation of this plate, there are no examples in the Mullinax book even close to this plate. This plate is significantly smaller than the original, the fat round hooks are not typical of any of the known authentic patterns, the back has been worked and smoothed considerably. It may have been cast from an original, but the maker would not have been able to make an exact copy of the back because of the presence of the hooks and therefore had to rework the back, this is why the back is not grainy, but instead shows significant signs of having been been smoothed and worked. I have also received information that this is typical of patterns made by Herbert Parsley, a sutler, although I am unable to verify this.
