P2628 ### Hanover Brass repro: CS rectangle belt plate, rounded corners.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSGP19 Plate 126 (Spun Hooks) Solid Cast CS Belt Plate. 44 x 70mm. Marked GW. These CS plates were called the Tennessee style. Most were dug in the Western theater but a few were dug in Virginia. Probably lost by Longstreet's men. You need to find a casting flaw because this plate is a popular one to fake. Remember that it is 2mm smaller. The only problem is this belt plate comes in different sizes. The picture has several flaws you can use to identify this plate.

This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSGP20 Plate 130 (Tennessee Type) CS Belt Plate. 43 x 68mm. Marked GW. Most of these plates were dug in the Western theater and some from late-war sites in Virginia. The reproduction is much smaller than the original. The back of the reproduction is smooth where the original shows sand casting.

This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSGP21 Plate 131 (Lined Hook) CS Belt Plate. 45 x 71mm. Marked GW. This plate is found in Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi. Called the lined hook because the vent rod left a line in the hooks when they pushed it through the sand mold. This was done to let the brass gases out when the hot metal was poured in the sand mold. It helped the hooks to be solid and not hollow. Pick out a flaw because this belt plate is close to the original.

P2636 ### Hanover Brass repro: CS rectangle belt plate, rounded corner.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSGP27 (actually CSGP37)Plate 125 (Solid Cast Tennessee C S Belt Plate) 43 x 70mm. Marked GW. These CS belt plates are in the top of the fakers list. This CS is 2 mm's smaller than the original . My reproduction is very close to the original and I will show you what the fakers are doing to get this pretty aged color. They go to the gun shop and buy Birchwood Casey gun blue or brass black. They coat the buckle with this and bury it for several weeks. The CS pictured has been buried about three or four weeks. You can rub the original all day long and the color will not rub back to bright brass. It will still have a brown under the green. You rub this CS that I buried and the color will come off very easy. This is the reason that when you buy a belt plate most fakers will say if the color is not the same as they sent you, then it's yours. They don't want you to rub on a fake. When you do this little test use a small spot on the back. Most of the time the hooks are already rubbed to shinny brass. What I am trying to get across to you is don't be fooled by aged color. You cannot put 140 + years age on a belt plate in a couple of years. The color will not just stay there and will turn back to brass color very easy. You can see in the top right how the color rubbed off to the red brass.

P3677 ### Fake fantasy or reproduction CS rounded corner cast plate, example does bear early Hanover Brass Foundry marks. At some point HBF stopped marking their plates, presumably to facilitate the selling of fakes. This is an early example where the marks were strong to prevent fakes. No value picture only.
