Confederate frame, FAKE-FANTASY-REPRODUCTION
Confederate, frame waist belt plate, gutter back style, Mullinax illustrations 171 to 172. Frame buckles are difficult to authenticate, Sizes vary significantly because many different sizes were made, and the finishing of the long edges can cause measurement to vary considerably one end to the other. Reliablity of source matters, but this is soft evidence at best. So frame plates shown in this section have been questioned , but these questions are just opinions, are seldom unanamous, and so authenticty is not certain. You take a look and see what you think.

F1228 Frame buckle, gutter back manufactured by Tim ParsleyPlate measures 57.9mm to 58.4mm (plate is not square) X 65.1mmEditor note: Plate was obtained directly from Tim Parsley as a sample of his production to be used in this presentation.Plate 173 standard frameThe term standard meant uniform or starting point. There are a great many variations in this standard piece and because of its simplicity, this is one of the most heavily faked patterns. Mullinax and O'Donnell in their book published one example of this plate. Keim published others. There are many different patterns of this buckle. Because of this variation and the simplicity of design, this is a favorite with fakers.

P2608 ### Hanover Brass repro: Frame Belt Plate.
This is an example of Hanover Brass commercial grade reproduction, the plate has been produced in quantity, sold to the living history market, and is generally readily available. The product has also been used as feedstock for fakes, with chemical aging and other alterations. Gary Williams has provided the following pictures and explanation:
Photo # CSGP32 Plate 171 (Gutter-Back) Frame Belt Plate. 58 x 65mm. GW stamped in the back. Original dug by Gary Williams, Malvern Hill. This is another very close belt plate and one that I reproduce more than others. Size is 2mm smaller. All of these frame belt plates were cast by many different foundries from 1861 to 1865. Many many were cast and they come in all sizes. You need to try to find a flaw. Find something that will help you use as a reference.
