Smoothbore flintlock musket, Model 1816, Springfield, 1817, .69cal. . The Model 1816 was originally designed as a flintlock muzzleloader, .69cal.smoothbore, manufactured from 1816 through 1844. Most were converted to percussion in the 1850's, this was not converted. Manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts. Marks: Lock is marked eagle over US in front of hammer, SPRING / FIELD and date, 1817 behind the lock, buttplate also dated, 1816, barrel is marked P, eagle head, Vand US. Model features: Rounded hammer versus the flat hammers of earlier models, lockplate is flat with a bevel the rear is rounded replacing the teat of earlier models, pan is iron and detachable secured with the frizzen by a single screw, iron buttplate is straight against the shoulder, iron strap opposite the lock, iron trigger guard, no rear sight, two iron barrel bands, two strap hooks with button or cylindrical swivel, large iron nose guard serves as third band and forward sight, bayonet lug on top of barrel at muzzle, steel ramrod is button head and threaded. Smoothbore flintlock musket, Model 1816, Springfield, 1830, converted to percussion in 1850's using Belgian cone alteration, .69cal. . The Model 1816 was originally designed as a flintlock muzzleloader, .69cal. smoothbore, manufactured from 1816 through 1840. Most were converted to percussion in the 1850's, this one by the Belgian cone alteration, this method was performed at the arsenals. The flintlock pan was milled flat to the lock, the void filled with brass and the top milled flush with the lock, the flintlock hole was plugged, a nipple lug was placed on top of the barrel slightly to the side of lock, and a new hammer was placed to achieve the correct alignment. Manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts. Marks: Lock is marked SPRING / FIELD / 1830 behind the hammer, with eagle head and US in front. Barrel is marked P, eagle head, and V, breech tang date is 1830. Buttplate is marked US. Trigger guard is marked DP and B. Lock strap is marked S, and one band is marked S. Two strong cartouches are in the wood opposite the lock. Model features: Iron buttplate is straight against the shoulder, iron strap opposite the lock, iron trigger guard, no rear sight, two iron barrel bands, two strap hooks with button or cylindrical swivel, large iron nose guard serves as third band and forward sight, bayonet lug on top of barrel at muzzle, steel ramrod is button head and threaded. Smoothbore flintlock musket, Model 1816, Springfield, 1831, converted to percussion using bolster alteration by Hewes & Phillips, 1862, .69cal. . The Model 1816 was originally designed as a flintlock muzzleloader, .69cal. smoothbore, manufactured from 1816 through 1840. Most were converted to percussion in the 1850's, this one by the bolster method, this alteration was performed by Hewes & Phillips, Newark New Jersey in 1862. The breech of the barrel was simply cut away entirely and replaced with a new section reworked with a bolster with cleanout screw and nipple, a hammer shaped for the new alignment was installed. and a three leaf rear sight was installed Manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts. Marks: Lock is marked SPRING / FIELD / 1831 behind the hammer, with eagle head and US in front. Barrel is marked VP over eagle head, breech tang was marked with date of conversion, 1862. The bolster is marked H & P. Buttplate marked US. Inspector marks on trigger guard, lock plate bar, and distinct round cartouche in the wood.
