Smoothbore flintlock musket, Model 1816, Remington conversion to rifled musket using Maynard system percussion, 1858, .69cal. . The Model 1816 was originally designed as a flintlock muzzleloader, .69cal. smoothbore, manufactured from 1816 through 1844. Remington Arms was given a contract to supply primer locks and percussion bolsters using the Maynard priming system. The conversion was performed at Frankfort Arsenal, and was well advanced from the other systems being developed at the time. The entire breech was cut off, and a new percussion nipple was installed, with a clean out screw, this design was eventually used with the Model 1861 muskets to follow. New locks were supplied using the Maynard tape priming system which was also being developed in parallel with the Model 1855. The new long range sight being developed for the Model 1855 was installed. The old smoothbore barrels were rifled. Conversion to percussion performed by Remington Arms, at Frankfort Arsenal.
