Rifled percussion musket, English Enfield, London Armory, 1862, .577cal. . The English Enfield muskets were developed for the British military and were generally thought to be superior to American made muskets of the period. Many were exported, a number of American military units, both north and south purchased them, many were smuggled through the blockade to southern ports during the war. Manufactured: London Armory, England. Marks: Lock is marked with a crown and VR behind the hammer, and 1862 / L. A. Co. in front. Barrel is marked (crown over omega), 25 (which is .577 cal), (crown over V), and (double asterisks)., which means .577cal., or if 24, this is .58cal. Round London Armory cartouche appears on the butt right side, LONDON ARMORY / BERMONDSEY/ 1862. Name of the stock maker may also appear on the wood. Model features: Musket was designed as a single shot .577 or .58 cal rifled muzzleloader featuring brass buttplate, contoured shaped hammer, fixed bolster, long range sight with single leaf and sliding scale, brass trigger guard, three rounded barrel bands held in place with screws and not springs, two strap hooks on muzzle band and trigger guard, ramrod with straight shank and wiper slot and threads, brass nose cap.
